Repair and Strengthening of Pipes with Carbon FRP Laminates

PipeMedic™ is a patent-pending system from the family of SuperLaminates™ developed by Professor Mo Ehsani (University of Arizona) for repair and strengthening of steel, cast iron, corrugated metal, clay, brick, concrete, Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipe (PCCP) and wooden pipes and culverts with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) laminates.  Such pipes are used for conveyance of water, sewer, storm water, oil, gas and other chemicals.  Steel and concrete tanks for storage of water, oil, and other chemicals can also be repaired with PipeMedic™.  PipeMedic™ allows for the highest quality repairs while reducing the repair time by as much as 80%.

The laminates are manufactured in our plant meeting the highest industry standards (ISO-9000).   PipeMedic™ is manufactured by placing several layers of carbon or glass fabrics together, and applying resin, heat and pressure to obtain very thin (0.025 inches or 0.7 mm) laminates that can be as wide as 60 inches (1.5 m); they are typically packaged in 300 ft (90 m) rolls.  The rolls of PipeMedic™ can be taken into pipes from access ports as small as 8 inches (200 mm) in diameter.

Some of the unique features of PipeMedic™ are:

  • Laminates are custom designed per pressure requirements of the project
  • Strength of laminates can be verified by testing prior to installation in the pipe
  • A single laminate can replace several layers of fabric that would have to be installed with wet layup method
  • Can be used for pipes 8 inches (200 mm) in diameter and larger
  • Can be used for full length or point/spot repair of pipes
  • Application by hand or remotely with the aid of packers
  • Improves flow characteristics due to its smooth finish
  • Reduces repair time by as much as 80% compared to wet layup repair with Carbon FRP
  • Zero excavation is required – a truly trenchless “no dig” product
  • No bypass on the street level and traffic disruption

Application steps are:

  • Mix the two-component epoxy provided
  • Apply a thin coat of the epoxy on the back face of PipeMedic™
  • Release coiled PipeMedic™; its elastic memory forces the laminate to stick against the pipe surface – like a loaded spring
  • Make any necessary alignment adjustments
  • Install next piece of PipeMedic™, providing sufficient overlap with the previously-installed piece
  • PipeMedic™ can also be applied in a continuous spiral with a robot that is currently under development

The resulting benefits are:

  • A very strong pipe inside the host pipe
  • The repair can be designed to resist all internal pressures independent of the host pipe
  • Virtually no Loss in Diameter
  • One Size Fits All – PipeMedic™ fits all circular, oval, elliptical, horseshoe- and egg-shaped pipes
  • Improved hydraulic flow over the smooth surface of PipeMedic™
  • No Annular Space to Grout
  • Ambient Cure, so No Temperature or Steam Required
